Characterized by a few large Victorian mansions interspersed among row houses, it has been home to some of the city’s most prominent citizens. For instance, one-time mayor Kurt Schmoke, and Maryland State Senators Catherine Pugh and Lisa Gladden. The current mayor, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, lived there as a child, along with prominent Baltimore lawyer Dwight Pettit. In addition to single family homes, Ashburton also has a large scale apartment complex that houses less affluent members of the community. One of the things that accounts for Ashburton’s success, according to its residents, is the fact that the neighbors know each other well and look out for their own and other children. They also work hard to keep the community looking good, and are especially interested in making the area more environmentally friendly. While Ashburton is not far from the hustle and bustle of downtown, it is nonetheless quiet and suburban like in atmosphere. This makes it especially attractive to those who are looking for a quiet retreat that is still within easy access of all the city has to offer. * List of Baltimore neighborhoods
